International Altimetry Service (IAS)
Following endorsements by GLOSS, IAPSO and IAG the International Altimetry Service is established as IAG initiative with the general objectives to
- provide a point of contact for general information on satellite altimetry and its applications;
- communicate with, and interface to, altimeter mission data providers, centres which process, archive, and analyse altimeter data, and other related services and organizations;
- promote satellite altimetry as a core element of Global Earth Observing Systems; and
- help users to compile and analyse data, and respond to altimeter user requirements.
With reliable and new, emerging technologies satellite altimetry has numerous applications areas and gains from a mission history already lasting several decades. An utmost complete and comprehensive overview on missions, technologies and applications is gathered.
There are many organisations already providing altimetry data, products, and value-added services. Metadata on processing and analysis centres, and providers of data and products is compiled to inform users where to get what data and informations.
This service should act mission and agency independent and can only be realised as integrated effort with close collaboration between data providers, archive and product centres, and research laboratories. We invite all parties as well as users to contribute.
